Why Lumida Exists

You've called dozens of offices.
Most said no.

Finding medical care for an adult with a developmental disability is one of the most frustrating experiences a family can face. It's not that caring doctors don't exist — it's that there's no way to find them.

Mother and daughter consult with doctor about care in a medical office.

The problem isn't a shortage of doctors. It's a shortage of information.

Millions of adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities need ongoing, specialized medical care. Their providers must be prepared — with accessible exam tables, sensory-friendly environments, extended appointment times, and real experience.

That information exists — scattered across social media groups, Facebook threads, and word of mouth. We built Lumida to make it findable.

Caregivers spend years searching. We're changing that.

On average, caregivers of adults with IDD spend over 4 years searching for a reliable primary care provider. Many give up. Others drive hours for every appointment.

Lumida gives caregivers a single, trusted, searchable place — organized by specialty, disability type, state, and the specific accommodations each practice actually offers.

Read real profiles, not just a name and address

Every listing tells you what the practice actually offers: communication accommodations, behavioral supports, accessible facilities, insurance accepted, and community reviews from families who've been there.

"After 11 years of being turned away — or worse, enduring a visit where the staff clearly didn't know how to work with Marcus — we found his dentist through Lumida in 20 minutes. He's been going every six months without incident. I still can't believe it was that simple."

DIANE M.

Mother of Marcus, 34 — autism spectrum

JR

"As a direct support professional, I help five different adults get to their medical appointments. Having one place where I can find providers for all of them — by what each person actually needs — has saved me dozens of hours. This should have existed twenty years ago."

JAMES R.

Direct Support Professional — Chicago, IL

KL

"My sister has cerebral palsy and needs a Hoyer lift to be transferred to the exam table. Most practices just don't have the equipment. Lumida let me filter specifically for that. First result was a clinic two miles from our house. Two miles."

KAREN L.

Guardian of Sofia, 29 — cerebral palsy — Denver, CO

Common Questions

Everything you need to know.

Is Lumida free to use?

Yes — completely free for families, caregivers, and individuals. We are a nonprofit, and we will never charge families to search the directory, contact a provider, or leave a review. Provider listings are also free.

What disabilities does Lumida cover?

Lumida covers all developmental and intellectual disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, Fragile X syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and others. We are not condition-specific — if a provider serves adults with any developmental disability, they belong in our directory.

What kinds of providers can I find on Lumida?

Our directory includes all medical specialties: primary care, dentistry, psychiatry, neurology, gastroenterology, gynecology, orthopedics, and more. We also include allied health providers such as occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and behavioral analysts.

How do providers get listed?

Providers can self-list through a simple submission form on this site. Community members can also submit providers they know and trust. Every listing goes through a basic verification process — we do not guarantee every provider's approach, but we do verify that listed practices are real and have been identified by the IDD community as helpful.

I know a great doctor who should be on here. How do I nominate them?

We love this. Use the 'Submit a Provider' form — you don't need an account. Tell us the practice name, location, and specialty. Our team will reach out to them, and with their consent, add them to the directory.

Does Lumida cover all 50 states?

Yes. We cover all 50 U.S. states. Our directory is newer in some regions than others — if your area is thin on listings right now, it will grow. You can also help by submitting providers you already know.

Is Lumida affiliated with any government agency or insurance company?

No. Lumida is an independent nonprofit. We are not affiliated with any government agency, insurance company, or healthcare system. We have no financial relationship with any listed provider. Our only mission is to help families find the care they need.
